As I’ve introduced on the post How to Choose the Right Type of Web Hosting? , there’re several types of Web Hosting, like Shared Hosting, VPS, Dedicated Server. Among them, Shared Hosting is most popular, about 80% websites are hosted on shared servers.

What’s Shared Hosting?

Shared hosting means your website(s) and other websites share one server. With shared hosting, your website is hosted on the same server with maybe hundreds of other sites. Each website gets its own domain.

Sometimes Shared hosting is also called virtual hosting.

Shared hosting is designed to meet the needs of most personal or small & medium commercial  websites. Shared hosting plan can easily be upgraded to VPS, or Dedicated server if needed.

What’re the advantages of Shared Hosting?

Shared hosting is easy to use. With shared hosting, you don’t have to deal with the system and softwares needed for running the server yourself, so you don’t need those special skills. Actually it’s ready-to-use.

Shared hosting is more affordable than other types of hosting because the cost to run the server is shared with other site owners.

Shared hosting usually offers database, e-mail, and more options.

Compared to VPS, dedicated server, Shared hosting,  however, has some shortages, such as reduced security, restrictions on CPU/memory usage, slower loading speed.
